NEW PROJECT IN DESIGN A rolling wooded landscape provides a difficult but interesting challenge for the design of a new single- family residence in northern Illinois. The ½ acre site sits on a steep incline amid locust, poplars and evergreens a few miles northeast of Chicago. The area features a picturesque forest setting complete with small herds of foraging deer and several species of native fowl. Central to the design theme is the need for a moderately priced home that allows for a growing family's needs without compromising the delicate natural terrain. The steep grade runs diagonally across the lot and imposes a constraint on the typical 2 level suburban plan. But this is more than compensated for by the rare opportunity to create living space literally "in the treetops" on two sides of the house. The home will be developer built and suitable for a middle-income family of 4 or 5. Soils and structural engineering are required to provide safety to the environment and to anchor the multi-level design while permitting the natural flow of the site. |
